Hey, there! Lindsey Goddard here! I just finished a book, and my first thought was, “That was so weird, it deserves a spot on Weird Wide Web!”
Spooky horror writer Matt Brandenburg released a new novel last Spring (…And Out Come the Toys) which blends his lifelong love of Willy Wonka and punk music with the kind of mentally-disturbing nightmare fuel that will leave you checking over your shoulder next time you pass the toy aisle in the department store. I’m not ordinarily disturbed by the whole haunted doll / possessed toy schtick, but the evil playthings you’ll encounter in the pages of …And Out Come the Toys inflict some serious biological damage, all described in painfully descriptive detail! This is definitely an adult novel, but the plot is built around a childlike whimsy that left me feeling nostalgic for old times. I really enjoyed it!
Plot:
Every child wants to win a tour of the Challis Toy Factory. That is, until the lucky five go missing, the factory shuts down, and Challis goes into hiding.
Ten years later, Justin Wilder—loser, punk, Challis Toy fanatic—plans on giving his friends one final adventure before they move on to college without him. This will be a night they’ll never forget. The whimsical dreamland they expected turns out to be a beaten-up, rundown nightmare, and there’s still a lot of magic left in the old toy factory, but it’s darker than anyone could have dreamed of.
Will Justin and his friends be able to fight their way through a world of bizarre machines, deadly rooms, and monstrous toys, or will they become the newest permanent residents of a world where toys play deadly games with people?
